    RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Located in Matanzas, Chile, the cabins La Loica and La Tagua were designed by Croxatto y Opazo Arquitectos as minimalist holiday homes that blend with the surrounding coastal environment. The project is defined by its strategic position on a steep, wind-swept hill, offering expansive views of the Pacific Ocean. The project's design focused on creating small-footprint volumes that respect the natural landscape while maximizing coastal views. Designed by Carl-Viggo Hølmebakk with his team, the 25-square-meter project successfully blends the rehabilitation of the old timber structure with a new, contemporary addition. The design is a sensitive and sophisticated response to the site's stunning yet demanding coastal climate, characterized by spectacular mountains and harsh winds. The original concept involved encasing the weathered timber core within a new protective shell, allowing the old house to stand freely inside. While this initial plan was modified, the final result still features a distinct and respectful relationship between the old and new elements. The built project focuses on the renovation of the existing house and the construction of a westward extension. The addition acts as a "pure extension," echoing the geometrical principles of the original structure, notably its asymmetrical dormer windows, which allow light into the loft and frame views of the landscape. To withstand the extreme wind conditions of the area, the structures are anchored using different methods. The pre-existing Nordlandshus is secured to the ground with guy wires, while the new prefabricated pine glulam extension is wind-anchored to an encompassing concrete slab, which provides a stabilizing counterweight. The material palette chosen for the Summer House Gravråk is both humble and resilient, allowing the building to integrate with its natural surroundings. The roof is covered with standing seam zinc roofing, offering durability against the elements. The interior features birch plywood cladding and pine flooring, providing a warm and modern finish. The windows are a two-fold design, with aluminum frames on the exterior for protection and wood on the interior to match the warm timber finishes. An artwork titled "this must be the place" by Swedish artist Jan Håfstrøm is integrated into the design, adding a unique and personal touch.     RESIDENTIAL | House | Situated on a rocky, forested site in Salo, Finland, the Two Sisters Holiday Home by MNY Arkitekter was designed for two siblings and their families. This vacation residence thoughtfully balances communal living with the need for individual privacy by dividing the program into two distinct units. The structures are arranged in a "down-to-earth" fan shape that preserves the surrounding pine trees and visible rocks, with the buildings' large windows oriented to maximize views toward the sea. The design is a contemporary expression of the traditional Finnish cabin, composed of four interconnected sections of varying heights. The units are joined by a central, sheltered terrace that serves as a shared outdoor living space. A narrow, inviting entrance is nestled between the two primary volumes, offering a first glimpse of the landscape beyond. The layout was specifically crafted to ensure that each unit enjoys equally impressive views, while interior sightlines between the two are intentionally limited, creating a sense of shared presence without sacrificing privacy. The holiday home was constructed using a prefabricated 180mm log frame, which was then clad in vertical spruce with a silicon treatment to achieve a weathered silver-grey finish that blends with the natural surroundings over time. The interior spaces celebrate this honest material palette, with visible roof beams and exposed wooden surfaces treated with lye to create a bright, serene atmosphere. Striking black fireplaces and dark built-in furniture provide a contemporary contrast to the light wood. Sustainability was a key consideration in the project. The building utilizes a prefab structure to minimize waste and features glue-laminated timber beams and recycled wood fiber insulation. Natural ventilation, air-source heat pumps, and underfloor heating contribute to the home's energy efficiency.     URBAN | University campus | Petronas University of Technology was founded in 1997 and is the region's largest academic centre for the study of civil, mechanical, chemical and electrical engineering. Fully funded by the Malaysian oil company Petronas, it aims to combine the best academic training with hands-on industrial experience to produce a new generation of graduates who can contribute to the country's industrial development. Located within the lush tropical landscape at Seri Iskandar, 300 kilometres north of the capital, Kuala Lumpur, the 450-hectare site is characterised by steep hills and lakes, which are a legacy of the area's history of tin mining. The design responds to the physical landscape of the site and to the weather patterns particular to this part of the world. While it can be intensely hot in the sun, in the monsoon season the skies open every afternoon to bring torrential rain, creating a cycle in which the ground is alternately scorched and soaked. To allow students to move around the campus freely, while shaded from the sun or protected from downpours, crescent-shaped canopies shelter the pedestrian paths that wind around the site. Held aloft by slender columns, these canopies intersect to encircle a landscaped park. Where possible, the planting and terrain have been preserved in their natural state, or reinstated, although some marshy land has been flooded to form a water installation. Arranged around the edge of the park are buildings for teaching and research, contained in four-storey blocks that tuck beneath the edges of the canopies. Cafés and other communal student facilities are located at the canopy intersections, which also correspond with the entrances to the housing accommodation. Marking the main entrance to the campus is the drum-like form of the resource centre. Containing a library and a multi-purpose auditorium, it is the university's chief social and ceremonial hub. Arranged around the edge of the park are buildings for teaching and research, contained in four-storey blocks that tuck beneath the edges of the canopies. Cafés and other communal student facilities are located at the canopy intersections, which also correspond with the entrances to the housing accommodation. Marking the main entrance to the campus is the drum-like form of the resource centre. Containing a library and a multi-purpose auditorium, it is the university's chief social and ceremonial hub. The future expansion of the campus will see the completion of a sports stadium and a mosque − amenities that will be shared with the residents of a new town that is growing up close to the campus.
