WORKSPACE | Multi-Functional Space | The Long Studio is a standalone, multi-functional outbuilding located on the midcoast of Maine, home to Acadia National Park. Designed by Eric W. Reinholdt of 30by40 Design Workshop, the studio acts as a "lens for the seasons," framing the changing local environment and serving as a testing ground for architectural ideas. It is a modern, craft-driven space that combines aesthetic purpose with practical function, reflecting Reinholdt's residential architecture philosophy. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Nestled in an ecological allotment garden in Groningen, the Netherlands, the Poplar Garden House is a small, contemporary shed designed by architect Haiko Meijer of Onix for his own family. Completed around 2011, the 32-square-meter cabin was conceived as a low-impact, off-grid retreat within the Tuinwijck allotment gardens, a green space where city residents can rent plots for gardening and leisure. The design prioritizes simplicity and sustainability, using materials and energy systems that respect its natural setting. The house features a simple gabled roof but is modernized through large openings and vertical glazing strips that echo the poplar panels used for its construction. Constructed entirely from uniform poplar planks, the house is both a functional living space and an artistic sculpture, with the boards covering the interior and exterior. This unified material palette, from the walls and floors to the foundation and roof, creates a consistent and warm aesthetic. The planks are designed to be removable, allowing for future artistic customization. Its L-shaped floor plan and strategic placement create two distinct outdoor areas: a sunny, extroverted space facing a playground and a private, introverted, and shaded space facing a drainage ditch. The interior features a central living space, a compact kitchenette with a gas cooktop, and a concrete counter that merges with a built-in fireplace. With no electric power supplied to the allotment, the house is completely powered by natural daylight and rooftop solar panels. A circular skylight and narrow vertical windows illuminate the space, while a raised sleeping loft offers a cozy, elevated sleeping area. RESIDENTIAL | House | Forest House 02 is a minimalist and lightweight tiny home designed by Chu Van Dong of D12 Architect. Completed in 2018, the 45 m² house is located in the northern mountains of Vietnam, near Hanoi, and was created to serve as a serene retreat for 2–4 people. The house is notable for its innovative, treehouse-inspired design, which perches it on a steep hill and uses a playful "hammock deck" to integrate the living space with a large, existing tree trunk. The design of Forest House 02 prioritizes a minimal impact on the natural surroundings and an intimate connection with the environment. The house is built with a simple, lightweight structure using steel box frames, wood, glass, lightweight concrete, and clay stone. This approach reduces the load on the foundation and minimizes the construction's effect on the landscape. The house is supported by two steel pillars and rests on a rock drop-off, making it feel like it is floating among the treetops. The interior, at nearly 500 square feet, is arranged in an L-shape, accommodating a combined living room-kitchen area and a bedroom. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows and sliding doors liberate the views and maximize the interaction between the interior and the forest. Forest House 02 is distinguished by its material choices and unique features that blend comfort with the outdoors. A favorite feature is the "hammock-like" terrace, an outdoor playground with a net deck that wraps around a large tree trunk, offering a relaxing, semi-suspended space among the branches. The predominantly wooden interior is accented with stone and marble, creating a "luxe glamping" feel that is both rustic and elegant. As with Chu Van Dong's earlier work, the project demonstrates a commitment to creating low-cost yet well-designed residential spaces. RESIDENTIAL | Hut | The Ljungdalen mountain hut, completed in 2014 by Lowén Widman Arkitekter, is a modern reinterpretation of traditional timber-framed houses typical of Sweden's Härjedalen region. Situated in the small village of Ljungdalen, where forest meets high mountains, the holiday home was designed for the Widman family to serve as a year-round retreat for a large family or several smaller ones over generations. RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Completed in 2021, Cabin Solena by Desterro Arquitetos is a 28-square-meter micro-dwelling and retreat located on a rural property in Flores da Cunha, Brazil. The clients sought a refuge that would allow for a deep connection with nature. The project is composed of two distinct volumes and is focused on immersing guests in the surrounding natural environment, which includes fruit trees, a small creek, and local wildlife. The main volume of the cabin features a gable roof that extends nearly to the ground, with floor-to-ceiling windows at either end providing expansive views of the natural scenery. Inside this space, a bed and a small kitchenette are arranged, along with a wood-burning stove for heating. A skylight in the roof allows for both daytime and nighttime sky viewing. A smaller, attached volume contains the bathroom, which also features a floor-to-ceiling window to connect the user with nature while showering. A commitment to integration with nature is highlighted by the architects' decision not to install blinds or curtains, allowing for a direct experience of the weather, time of day, and sounds of the outdoors. The program extends outdoors onto a deck, which features an outdoor table, grill, and a wood-fired hot tub. The use of fire is a key element of the experience, utilized in the hot tub, grill, and indoor stove. The entire interior is clad in wood, and the structure is supported by a metal frame that touches the ground at minimal points to respect the terrain. COMMERCIAL/RESIDENTIAL | Mixed-use | At the turn of the 90ies, Jean Nouvel was called to Prague as a large urban redevelopment study was being under­taken by the city on the right side of the river Vltava, south of the Castle in the Smichov district. All along the studies Nouvel emphasized the irrelevance of long term planning which has proven unfit in most post-war projects and the necessity of an approach delicately phased. The Smichov urban plan illustrates Nouvel’s strategy of induction or “acupuncture”. The Andel complex is the first building realized within this plan and developed by the Dutch firm ING which had participated in the early studies. It is located on a major site of the district with a metro station underneath and a tramway line running on the main street by the building. Aimed at “lighting up” the district, the project features a mixed-used program featuring a shopping mall, commerce and office spaces which could be converted into hous­ing in the future. The buildings occupy three sides of the city block with a large public space on the main street and a square on the upper level. The complex bends to the genius locii and exhibits strong industrial features with metal siding. This tough look is softened by a series of graphics clothing the facades : verses of chosen poems on the metal siding, cloudy forms serigraphied on glass parts, colorful canopies using trade marks at commerce level… a way for Nouvel to plug into the tradition of a city with its painted and written facades. The theme of the angel is related to the name of the place. The big figure serigraphied on glass which enhances the drum building at the north-east corner of the site is also linked to the will of the architect to introduce contemporary imagery in his build­ings whether of photographic or cinematographic origin. Here, Wim Wender’s character of “the Sky over Berlin” stands as a tutelary figure to the district. As a coincidence a small fresco of an angel was discovered during ground work : today it adorns a wall of the metro station. The design is a response to the diverse local climate, which can range from warm, rainy afternoons to fierce, stormy nights. It is built of laminated wood and insulated with stone wool, making it adaptable to changing weather conditions. A key feature of the design is its ability to transform and open up to nature manually, using a simple pulley system. The project was developed to promote domestic tourism by creating stylish, modern architecture that complements the region's pristine natural landscape, known for its glacial lakes and relict forests.
