    RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Designed by JVA Jarmund Vigsnæs AS Architects MNAL, the Cabin in Nordmarka is a 120-square-meter retreat completed in 2004 in a freshly cut clearing in a forest near Oslo, Norway. Created primarily for use during the winter cross-country skiing season, the cabin is elevated off the ground and is designed to take in views of the soft hills, lakes, and low winter sun toward the southern horizon. The design is conceived as a "thick house," with secondary spaces serving as a form of insulation between the exterior and the interior core. This core is a two-story central space that functions like a small urban piazza and is filled with light from the sides and above. This central area features varied ceiling heights, ranging from smaller, cave-like children's beds to a high-ceilinged common room. Natural light is filtered into this central space through the surrounding secondary rooms. The materials and color palette reflect traditional housing in the area: a black-stained wooden shell and a light-wood interior. The timber construction features substantial insulation, with walls insulated to 15 cm, floors to 20 cm, and the roof to 25 cm. Wooden panels are used for cladding both the interior and exterior, and the roof is covered with wooden panels over a membrane. Interior fittings and the kitchen are custom-designed by the architects, using pine plywood. Pine and fir were used for both the cladding and construction. The bathroom and hallway floors are finished with limestone, and a plastered masonry fireplace provides warmth. Created primarily for use during the winter cross-country skiing season, the cabin is elevated off the ground and is designed to take in views of the soft hills, lakes, and low winter sun toward the southern horizon. The design is conceived as a "thick house," with secondary spaces serving as a form of insulation between the exterior and the interior core. This core is a two-story central space that functions like a small urban piazza and is filled with light from the sides and above. This central area features varied ceiling heights, ranging from smaller, cave-like children's beds to a high-ceilinged common room. Natural light is filtered into this central space through the surrounding secondary rooms. The materials and color palette reflect traditional housing in the area: a black-stained wooden shell and a light-wood interior. The timber construction features substantial insulation, with walls insulated to 15 cm, floors to 20 cm, and the roof to 25 cm. Wooden panels are used for cladding both the interior and exterior, and the roof is covered with wooden panels over a membrane. Interior fittings and the kitchen are custom-designed by the architects, using pine plywood. Pine and fir were used for both the cladding and construction. The bathroom and hallway floors are finished with limestone, and a plastered masonry fireplace provides warmth.     RESIDENTIAL | Summer House | Located at Følle Strand in Rønde, Denmark, the Strandvejen 35 project is a tiny summer house designed by Jesper Kusk Arkitekter, completed in 2023. The structure is a modern, yet respectful interpretation of the area's traditional fisherman's cabins, and it was created with an ethos of high quality and ingenuity within a compact 46-square-meter footprint. To maximize the small space, the design features three wood-clad, gabled volumes arranged in an offset layout, which allows the home to accommodate up to seven people. The design prioritizes a connection with the surrounding nature and a sense of spaciousness despite its modest size. Expansive glazing and strategically placed skylights draw daylight deep into the interior, while large windows frame views of the scenic Kalø Bay. To blur the line between indoor and outdoor living, the architect incorporated features like built-in benches and sofas, which create intimate zones for experiencing the natural environment even during less-than-ideal weather. High ceilings in every room also contribute to an illusion of greater volume by providing ample cubic meters of air within the home.     RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Half-Tree House, designed by Jacobschang Architecture, is a 360-square-foot, off-grid cabin located on a remote, 60-acre property in a second-growth forest in Sullivan County, upstate New York. Built on a budget of just $20,000, the residence was constructed entirely by its owners and a team of friends in the "New England barn-raising" spirit. The house features a design that minimizes its impact on the steep, wooded site, creating the illusion that it floats among the trees. To achieve this "floating" effect, the structure uses a hybrid anchoring system. The upslope side of the cabin is supported by standard concrete footings, while the other side is suspended from two existing trees using a specialized treehouse fastener system called Garnier Limbs.     RESIDENTIAL | House | Situated in an olive grove in Halkidiki, Greece, The Olive Tree House is a 21-square-meter prefabricated summer house designed by Eva Sopeoglou Architecture and completed in 2016. The project was conceived as a low-maintenance, eco-conscious weekend retreat for its client, offering stunning views of the sea and the monasteries of Mount Athos. The design stands out for its creative use of a perforated, olive-green metallic envelope, which wraps around the structure and is inspired by the dappled shade of olive trees. This innovative cladding, developed in collaboration with metal fabricator METALSO, uses a CNC punching machine to create a textile-like pattern with leaf-shaped perforations. As the sun moves, this envelope fills the interior with a dynamic play of light and shadow, blurring the line between inside and outside. The house's rectangular, 3-by-7-meter plan is oriented to the cardinal points, a strategic placement that maximizes shading, natural ventilation, and views. A thin corridor connects the small interior rooms, which include a kitchen and bedroom, and is aligned with the surrounding olive trees. The building's orientation allows each room to have its own character based on the quality and intensity of its shadows, with colorful morning light on the east side and dramatic midday effects from the south. Full-height sliding metal doors allow the internal spaces to open up completely to the landscape, facilitating semi-indoor and outdoor living.
