The project is a contemporary reinterpretation of the traditional Norwegian cottage, designed for a couple who wanted a simple retreat to maintain a close connection with nature. A remarkable feature of the project was the high degree of client involvement, with the owners doing most of the construction work themselves using spruce harvested from their own forest. The design is sensitive to the surrounding terrain, which heals slowly due to climatic factors. To minimize its impact, the structure rests on a concrete base and incorporates three different levels, which helps to lower its overall height and integrates it with the site's topography. The exterior is clad in untreated spruce, which will naturally fade over time to a silvery-gray patina, further blending the cabin with its environment. Inside, the material palette is warm and simple, continuing the wooden theme with beamed ceilings. Different ceiling heights define the living room, kitchen, and bedroom functions within the main space. The entrance is protected from the elements by a shared gallery roof. Positioned at the strategic horn of Africa where the Red Sea meets the Gulf of Aden, the nation's built identity is a historical crossroads composed of nomadic Afar and Somali organic shelters, a compact coral-stone Arab-Islamic old quarter, and a formal French colonial military street grid, currently adapting to massive, high-tech international port infrastructure. It is an evolution of a garden house Schols originally created for his mother in 2016, which was celebrated for its reconfigurable, sliding layers. The design allows inhabitants to interact with nature by adjusting the cabin's shells to suit different weather conditions, occasions, or moods. The cabin is defined by its two main sliding "shells" that move on a rail system. Outer shell: A protective, insulated wooden layer made of sustainable Accoya wood. Inner shell: A transparent glass layer featuring high-quality, double-glazed windows. This dynamic design allows for several different configurations: Fully closed: Both the wooden and glass shells are closed to create a cozy, insulated space. Glass mode: The wooden outer shell is retracted to reveal the inner glass shell, offering panoramic views while remaining protected from the elements. Open-air: Both shells are slid open to fully expose the interior to nature, creating an open-air living platform. The flexibility enables residents to live with the elements rather than against them, fostering a deep connection with nature. The modular design is built on a wooden platform and relies on high-quality, natural materials. The structure draws inspiration from railway station trusses, relying on the side walls for stability. Minimal ecological impact is ensured through a screw foundation, which allows the cabin to be disassembled and relocated without a trace. The interior features birch plywood, creating a warm, light-filled atmosphere. A fixed section of the cabin houses essential facilities, including a kitchen, shower, toilet, and storage space. A loft provides a second sleeping area. Some versions of the cabin include a sunken bathtub integrated into the floor, which can be concealed when not in use. Cabin ANNA can be equipped for off-grid living with a fire-heated boiler, a solar energy system, and a water treatment system. Project credits Designer: Caspar Schols. Shaped by a dramatic volcanic landscape of steep, rainforest-covered mountains and vulnerable to intense Atlantic hurricane pathways, the country’s built environment eschews flat coastal grandeur in favor of sturdy, low-slung stone-and-timber vernacular cottages and robust, modern hurricane-proof concrete engineering designed to recede visually into the lush green topography. • Cabin in the Woods | K+S Architects | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The site is situated just north of the 1000-meter forest road, which runs east-west at an altitude of 1000 meters in Karuizawa Oiwake. Surrounding the area are few residential structures, and to the north lies a national wildlife sanctuary, ensuring that no future development will occur and preserving the existing forest. The site features a flat, diamond-shaped layout, one side of which adjoins a gravel road. The axis of the short diagonal is oriented almost due south, while the site itself exhibits a fan-shaped slope that complements the diamond configuration, making it challenging to interpret the seemingly straightforward shape. Upon my initial visit, I was struck by the pristine forest that gently sloped to the south, leading me to believe it would be an ideal location for constructing a simple cabin that fosters a connection with nature. To maintain a more primitive ambiance, we opted to minimize alterations to the site's original shape and to design various levels that harmonize with the natural topography. The lower level serves as a roofed outdoor space, the middle level functions as a semi-outdoor interior area, and the upper level provides an independent living space, ensuring greater privacy as one ascends. Furthermore, each level is adaptable, allowing for versatile use without being confined to specific functions, resulting in a minimalist environment. For instance, the lower level features an entrance porch and a terrace that connects to the garden, transforming into the main dining area during the summer months. The middle level is encircled by a kitchen, benches, and a wood-burning stove, creating an expansive hall that can serve multiple purposes. Both the terrace and hall can be fully opened to connect them seamlessly. A bench in the hall is positioned diagonally opposite the terrace bench, while considerable distance is maintained between spaces in both plan and cross-section, enabling one to fully appreciate the harmonious forest setting. The upper-level sleeping area connects to the hall via a change in elevation, serving as a spacious sofa for daytime relaxation and a sleeping area at night. The bathroom faces the mountainside opposite the road, allowing for an immersive experience of the vibrant northern forest. The three forest-set levels feature openings designed to resonate with the surrounding woodland, and by positioning them at varied elevations according to the site, they achieve a greater integration with the forest environment. The structure is a single-story wooden building constructed using traditional methods, with elevated floors supported by a minimal foundation and partially overhanging. The five exposed pillars supporting the roof of the hall are 75 x 150 mm flat columns that also function as mullions for the wooden fittings, ensuring a cohesive connection with the forest. The project was built on a site with an artificial pond, surrounded by an environment affected by excessive soil salinity from the nearby Gulf of Thailand. The design responds directly to these challenging site conditions with a dramatically sloping roof that channels fresh rainwater into the pond to help dilute the brackish water. The house originated from a simple cube that was diagonally sliced in half, resulting in a wedge-like volume. The steeply sloped, cantilevered roof and wall not only drain water but also shade the interior. Large glazing allows the interior to open up to views of the water, with the level of openness adjusted to the functions within. The highest level of openness is at the entrance terrace, while middle and low-level openings allow for panoramic views from the living space and bedroom, respectively, whether sitting or reclining. This creates a ""hierarchical openness"" that celebrates the water's edge. The cantilevered outdoor terrace features a steel grating floor, which allows rainwater to fall directly into the pond below and helps cool the air through water evaporation. Aluminum trellis panels are used on other walls for heat protection. The interior features an open-plan living space designed for multipurpose use. • The Hermitage Cabin | llabb Architects | ZHIG

RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The hermitage is a space of contemplation and reflection. Isolated from the world, it overlooks a still wild valley, secluded from everything. Space, not place. This is defined by wood panel, vertical and horizontal lines that are tuned in a thin yet clear equilibrium. The artefact is a hybridization between a Japanese tea house and a Scandinavian Cabin. It seems to recall the use of materials typically used in architecture, like metal facades and beam structures, reinterpreting through the use of wood. The project was realized in two weeks by the studio team, in order to deepen compositional themes and to transmit the “design with your hands” approach to the studio. This “know how” is always characterized by the llabb architettura work.
