    RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | The Cabin Laksvatn is a 50 m² retreat located on the Lyngen Peninsula near Tromsø in northern Norway, in a region known for its dramatic alpine landscape. Designed by Oslo-based Hamran/Johansen Arkitekter and completed in 2014, the cabin provides a comfortable and spacious accommodation for a large family with a total of nine beds, despite its modest footprint. The design was a creative response to the challenge of accommodating many people on a tight budget. The architects cleverly limited the net floor area to 50 m² to comply with Norwegian building codes, which impose additional technical demands on larger cabins. The solution involved utilizing the space beneath the pitched roof, where the low ceiling height does not legally count as floor area. This loft space was ideally suited for sleeping quarters. The cabin presents a contemporary take on a traditional form, with its classic pitched roof complemented by the use of extra-wide wooden cladding and large windows. The exterior cladding is made from glulam panels treated with natural pine tar, which will weather over time to blend with the natural surroundings. The interior is functional and minimalist, featuring exposed timber framing and knot-free pine paneling. The ground floor is constructed from in-situ cast concrete, which follows the natural terrain and defines the transition between the indoor and outdoor spaces. The loft space, measuring just 14 m², cleverly accommodates three single beds and two double beds. An additional double bed is located in a bedroom on the ground floor. To maximize light and create an immersive experience, the windows reach to the ceiling on the upper section, while their height variations at the bottom are strategically aligned with specific functions and views. A large window band offers panoramic mountain views in nearly every direction. A minimalist, cantilevered staircase with thin steel plates provides access to the loft, and an open steel grating on the upper level filters light from a skylight, emphasizing the cabin's verticality. The design draws on the features of a previous, dilapidated family cabin from 1942 that was on the same site, reinterpreting elements like its corner windows and exterior cladding.     RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Andina Patagónica #4 is a 65-square-meter cabin designed by forma Architecture in El Bolsón, Argentina, a location characterized by its Patagonian vegetation. Completed in 2019, the project is situated on a slope with views towards Cerro Piltriquitron. The architecture is adapted to the natural incline of the terrain, allowing the house to step down in a way that maximizes the panoramic vista. The cabin's design emphasizes efficiency and sustainability. A 2-foot by 2-foot grid system was used to modularize the construction, which reduced material waste and enabled a quicker build time. A substantial northern overhang was incorporated to passively protect the interior from the sun, while cross-ventilation provides a natural cooling mechanism. For the interior, full sheets of pine plywood were used to create a cozy, cabin-like feel, showcasing the modularity of the construction. The exterior material choices included charred wood, utilizing the Shou Sugi Ban technique on the north and south walls for weather protection, and black corrugated metal for the roof, east, and west walls. Half of the cabin rests on a concrete slab, providing thermal mass for regulating interior temperatures. Recycled cellulose was used for insulation.     RESIDENTIAL | Refuge | La Terencia is a 47-square-meter prefabricated beach refuge in Balneario Los Ángeles, Argentina, completed in 2022 by the architectural firm IR arquitectura. Designed to be a flexible and minimal dwelling, the structure can withstand the region's strong coastal weather while minimizing its environmental footprint. The refuge was entirely prefabricated in a workshop and assembled on-site in just two weeks, a process that significantly reduced construction time. The structure is built on a concrete slab to provide a stable base in the shifting coastal landscape. The steel tube frames consist of standard 1x2-inch and 2x2-inch sections, with the roof formed by shaped beams. The exterior is clad in galvanized sinusoidal sheet metal. The interior is lined with multi-laminate panels, and glass wool insulation is used in both the walls and roof to ensure optimal thermal and acoustic comfort.     RESIDENTIAL | Tiny Home | Completed in 2019, Maison Silex (Flint Shelter) is a tiny, 45-square-meter cabin designed by Maud Thoumyre of TAM Architecte. Situated in the village of Veules-les-Roses along France's Alabaster Coast, the cabin draws inspiration from the area's history and landscape, which is defined by flint, brick, and sandstone. The cabin's design is a protective response to the coastal climate, acting as a shelter from the harsh wind, rain, and sea spray. The house is intentionally reminiscent of the area's historic flint-and-brick homes. The small structure is built into a grassy cliffside slope overlooking the sea. Its design emphasizes the dichotomy between being open to the sun and sea during the day and closed off for intimacy and security in the evening.     PUBLIC | Congress Center | Studio Libeskind completed this innovative convention center in time for the advent of cultural and diplomatic activities in 2015, when this small medieval town transformed into the European Capital of Culture. The City of Mons conceived the Congres Centre as a new architectural landmark, a key element in a plan for economic revitalization, and as a connector between the old and the new. From the light- steel viewing platform at the top, a visitor can see the 17th-century Beffroi tower, a UNESCO Heritage Site of Belgium, in the historic center of town, and a new train station designed by Santiago Calatrava in the newer neighborhood of “Grands Prés.” The Congres Centre’s cladding is open in a manner that gives texture and light to the bearing structure—ribbon concrete walls that ascend in a spiral. The lower walls are clad with vertical slats of unfinished robinia wood that echo the trees in a neighboring park. The upper are clad with vertical bands of anodized aluminum that follow the curve of the wall. The ribbon walls allow for great flexibility of space, essential in a complex that houses a grand entrance hall, three auditoriums, a multi-purpose hall, conference rooms, offices, a restaurant, an underground parking and a green roof. The City of Mons conceived the Congres Centre as a new architectural landmark, a key element in a plan for economic revitalization, and as a connector between the old and the new. From the light- steel viewing platform at the top, a visitor can see the 17th-century Beffroi tower, a UNESCO Heritage Site of Belgium, in the historic center of town, and a new train station designed by Santiago Calatrava in the newer neighborhood of “Grands Prés.” The Congres Centre’s cladding is open in a manner that gives texture and light to the bearing structure—ribbon concrete walls that ascend in a spiral. The lower walls are clad with vertical slats of unfinished robinia wood that echo the trees in a neighboring park. The upper are clad with vertical bands of anodized aluminum that follow the curve of the wall. The ribbon walls allow for great flexibility of space, essential in a complex that houses a grand entrance hall, three auditoriums, a multi-purpose hall, conference rooms, offices, a restaurant, an underground parking and a green roof.     MULTI-FUNCTIONAL | Barn | The Sixteen-Oak Barn, created by HilberinkBosch architects, is a project rooted in local tradition and sustainable, on-site material reuse. Faced with the necessity of felling seven century-old oak trees on their estate near 's-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands, architects Annemariken Hilberink and Geert Bosch made the decision to repurpose the ailing timber themselves rather than selling it to a paper factory. This resourceful approach led to the construction of a new multi-purpose barn adjacent to their studio, which is housed in a converted farmhouse. The design of the Sixteen-Oak Barn draws inspiration from the traditional farmhouses of the Meierij region, which historically incorporated various functions into a single structure. The architects made use of every part of the felled oak trees, supplemented by a couple of additional oaks from the nearby Wamberg estate. A mobile sawmill was brought to the site to cut the best-quality core sections of the trunks into structural timber for the frames, roof, and façade. The asymmetrical roof, which features a steep and a low-pitched side, was covered with durable shingles made from smaller sections of oak. The rough-hewn exterior siding was created using pieces of timber with the bark still attached, which gives the façade a textured, organic appearance. The project also embraces the imperfections found in the materials, including marks left by remnants of barbed wire and shrapnel embedded in the old trees, which add to the building's character. The remaining waste wood was chopped and set aside for use as firewood to heat the building during colder months. The barn itself is a blend of rustic and modern aesthetics, incorporating a minimal palette of natural materials: oak, concrete, and glass. Inside, the exposed timber frame is paired with board-formed concrete walls, creating surfaces with unique patterns left by the sapwood used for the forms. Large glass panels and slatted windows allow light to flood into the interior.     HOTELS | Eco-lofts | Nestled in the arid, boulder-strewn terrain of the Valle de Guadalupe in Baja California, Mexico, the Hotel Encuentro Guadalupe is an "antiresort" that seeks to connect guests with the rugged landscape rather than separate them from it. Designed by Tijuana-based architect Jorge Gracia of Graciastudio, the hotel comprises 20 individual, elevated "eco-lofts" that appear to hover over the hillside, offering both privacy and panoramic views of the wine valley. The project was completed in 2011 and is part of a larger, 99-hectare development that includes a winery and a residential area. From its inception, the design philosophy prioritized environmental preservation.
