- Krabbebu Cabin | KIMA Arkitektur | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Cabin | Situated on the rocky shoreline of Ny-Hellesund, Norway, the Krabbebu Cabin is a simple yet thoughtfully designed holiday retreat that harmonizes with its rugged coastal landscape. Completed in 2022, the 47-square-meter cabin was designed by Oslo-based firm KIMA Arkitektur in collaboration with the owners, an internationally acclaimed furniture and product designer couple. Inspired by the aesthetic of local fishing huts, the cabin's minimal and modest silhouette is strategically placed among rocky outcrops to provide shelter from the elements. To maximize the small footprint for a family of five, the interior features an open-plan living room and kitchen, a bedroom, and a bathroom. The interior design, overseen by the client, incorporates custom-built kitchen furnishings to suit the compact space. The inside is clad entirely in pine wood, creating a warm, camp-like atmosphere that emphasizes the structure's materiality. The cabin is oriented toward the sea, with large windows providing expansive views of the water. A small outdoor deck and jetty further connect the residents with their surroundings, allowing for easy access to the water and coastal landscape. The exterior is also clad in pine wood, helping the cabin blend seamlessly into the Norwegian shore. The structure was built by local craftspeople, ensuring it reflects the regional building traditions. - A-Frame House | Birdseye | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | House | A-Frame is a single-family private residence located on Lake Bomoseen in Vermont. The project site is on the western shore of the lake and adjacent to the vehicular bridge. The structure is designed for maximum views and ground access to the lake front. The main gable structure accentuates the eastern lake views with floor to ceiling glass and is bookended with an open deck that leads to the lake and boat dock. The secondary gable form provides views to the south from the first floor and upper roof deck. The project program is divided into two separate living spaces. The primary living space includes entry mudroom, powder room, utility, kitchen, dining, living, two-bedroom suite, primary bedroom suite, upper roof deck, and two car garage. The secondary living space includes a separate entry, living space, kitchen, dining and two bedroom suite with roof deck access. Conceptually, the project is inspired by the traditional mid-century A-frame, a residential building structure typology. The project consists of two perpendicular gables. The east/west ridge gable is informed by the eastern lake view and the perpendicular north/south gable cants westerly to capture the views down the lake to the south. The second-floor roof deck is defined by open roof trusses and slat-work that visually extends the a-frame structure. - The Voxel Quarantine Cabin | Valldaura Labs | ZHIG
EXPERIMENTAL | Cabin | The Voxel Quarantine Cabin, located in Collserola natural park near Barcelona, Spain, is a 12-square-meter off-grid prototype designed and built in 2020 by students and researchers from IAAC's MAEBB program. The Voxel is a self-sufficient cabin for one person to quarantine for 14 days. It embodies a "circular metabolism" by using locally sourced and processed natural materials with industrialized techniques to promote sustainable green building. All timber for the project came from Aleppo Pine trees harvested locally according to a sustainable forestry plan. This timber was milled, dried, processed, and pressed on-site into cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels for the structure. The 3.6 x 3.6-meter cube is assembled using metal-free lap joints and wooden dowels instead of metal fixings. The interior features exposed CLT, with the same wood used for custom furniture like a platform bed and desk. The exterior is insulated with cork and covered with a unique rainscreen made from offcuts of the CLT production. These charred wood slats, treated with the shou sugi ban technique for weatherproofing, are arranged in a gradient, highlighting the natural shape of the tree. Some sections of the façade are extended to house utilities like water tanks and an outdoor shower. The cabin is self-sufficient with a water-energy-waste system that includes solar panels and battery storage, rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling, and a biogas system for blackwater treatment to produce fuel and fertilizer. The roof also incorporates computer-designed garden boxes for local plants that help filter rainwater. photography by José Hevia. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/a0ba0f_9880843e1a8d486188e3894254944ada~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_818,h_787,al_c,q_85/411.The%20Voxel%20Quarantine%20Cabin%20by%20Valldaura%20Labs-Jos%C3%A9%20Hevia%20(3).jpg 1/0 Private Public Pin Pin 0 x Appreciators 0 3D models Product 3.9K Views 0 Appreciated Appreciate Please login to appreciate The Voxel Quarantine Cabin Barcelona, Spain valldaura.net Source: Published on Sep 23, 2025 by: Media Micro Homes Premium Member More Buildings from Spain Facts: Up Up Architecture Office Valldaura Labs Spain Category: EXPERIMENTAL Cabin Project Type: Post Type: Building Country: Spain José Hevia Photographers: Architects: Valldaura Labs Area: 12 m² Year: 2020 City: Barcelona Construction: - Client - Description: the Architects Text description by The Voxel Quarantine Cabin, located in Collserola natural park near Barcelona, Spain, is a 12-square-meter off-grid prototype designed and built in 2020 by students and researchers from IAAC's MAEBB program. - The Grand Canal Square Theatre and Commercial Development | Daniel Libeskind Studio | ZHIG
CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE | Theatre and Commercial Center | Located on the Dublin waterfront, the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre, formerly the Grand Canal Theatre, is a 2,000-seat theater at the heart of a multi-use complex conceived for by the City of Dublin as part of a plan to revitalize its docklands. Studio Daniel Libeskind completed the theatre in 2010 and an office complex called the Grand Canal Harbour development a year later. The theater overlooks a public plaza designed by Martha Schwartz Associates. Like a grand outdoor lobby, the plaza invites the public to view the soaring glass façade of the theater much like a glass curtain, which tilts back in space in diagonal pleats. The public can gaze into its Piranesian interior of horizontal ramps and diagonal pilotes. The design concept for the theater is, in fact, stages—the theater’s ‘real’ stage and the plaza as another, equally real but more provisional and changing stage. By night, when the second floor lobby of the theater is activated by users, and the theater’s tilting façade and plaza are illuminated, the entire complex transforms into a multi-experiential stage. The Bord Gáis Energy Theatre is flanked on the street side by two office buildings designed by Libeskind. The two office blocks comprising the commercial development provide sustainable and sophisticated work environments. The development and cultural spaces created a strong presence that is now the address for several international corporate headquarters such as Facebook, Twitter and Google. The redevelopment helped to keep this neighborhood thriving during an economic downturn by creating a desirable area in which to work, live and play. The project was completed in 2010. | https://static.wixstatic.com/media/9756fd_03a5bacdf3c64b49b9f88dbcd1c8b533~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_2280,h_1235,al_c,q_90/The%20Grand%20Canal%20Square%20Theatre%20and%20Commercial%20Development.jpg 1/0 Private Public Pin Pin 0 x Appreciators 0 3D models Product 4.7K Views 0 Appreciated Appreciate Please login to appreciate The Grand Canal Square Theatre and Commercial Development Grand Canal Square, Docklands, Dublin 2, Ireland. www.libeskind.com Source: Published on Sep 26, 2023 by: Photographer Anna Salonen Premium Member More Buildings from Ireland Facts: Up Up Architecture Office Daniel Libeskind Studio United States Category: CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE Theatre and Commercial Center Project Type: Post Type: Building Country: Ireland Photographers: Architects: Daniel Libeskind Studio Area: 148,171 sq.ft Year: 2010 City: Dublin Construction: PJ Hegarty & Sons Client Ramford Limited, Chartered Land Description: the architects Text description by Located on the Dublin waterfront, the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre, formerly the Grand Canal Theatre, is a 2,000-seat theater at the heart of a multi-use complex conceived for by the City of Dublin as part of a plan to revitalize its docklands. Our Studio is a collaboration of architects and designers that believe architecture is a practice of optimism. We approach our projects with the attitude that to make great places, you must believe in the future, but also remember the past. Studio Libeskind’s architecture emerges from the idea that a building should be expressive and reflect contemporary life. Innovation is at the core of our design process. We believe that bold design must be realized with sustainable technology and we strongly believe that the art of architecture lies in creating a maximum impact within the constraints of budgets and functionality. We know from experience that great architecture comes from working with great clients; however, architecture is a public art and we hold ourselves accountable not only to the client, but to the communities, and cities in which we build. Daniel and his partner Nina Libeskind established Studio Daniel Libeskind in Berlin, Germany, in 1989 after winning the competition to build the Jewish Museum Berlin. In February 2003, Studio Daniel Libeskind moved its headquarters from Berlin to New York City when Daniel Libeskind was selected as the master planner for the World Trade Center redevelopment. source: libeskind.com Category Theatre and Commercial Center Post Type Building Project Type CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE Country Ireland Year 2010 Area 148,171 sq.ft Client Ramford Limited, Chartered Land Photographers www.zhiig.com Premium Member Photographer Anna Salonen Collaborate 3D Design Suggest Materials Suggest Product Add Request Design © ZHIG Team Materials Suggested by Manufacturers: Model Full Name Details Details View more

- O_CASELLA | Atelier LAVIT | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Prefabricated Cabin | The O_CASELLA cabin is a prefabricated wooden shelter designed by Atelier LAVIT, the Paris-based architecture and design practice founded by Marco Lavit. Located in a spectacular landscape on the eastern plain of Corsica, France, the cabin was conceived to allow for full immersion in nature while maintaining comfort and protection. The name O_CASELLA is a play on the word "casella," which means "little box" or "shelter" in Corsican, reflecting the cabin's functional and minimalist nature. The design of O_CASELLA is based on two distinct, yet connected, modular volumes: a living module and a pergola. This structure addresses the demands of the warm Mediterranean climate by creating large, shaded areas for outdoor living. To minimize cost and environmental impact on the remote site, the entire cabin was prefabricated in a wood workshop. The modules were then transported fully assembled to the location, significantly reducing on-site construction time and disruption. The closed living module contains the kitchen, bathroom, and a flexible living/sleeping area. It provides framed views of the surrounding wild Corsican mountains and sea through large windows. The open-air pergola provides a ventilated and shaded space for outdoor relaxation, reading, or contemplating the landscape. A movable, mashrabiya-style shutter on a rail system allows occupants to regulate sunlight and air flow. The exterior structure and cladding are made from local Corsican larch (laricciu), a lightweight yet strong wood that contributes to the cabin's portability and durability. The interior walls and ceiling are lined with MDF wood, creating a cozy and protective atmosphere. A generous covered pergola extends the living space outdoors, with an outdoor shower providing an even more direct connection to nature. A steel beam on the façade serves a dual purpose: it hides the rail system for the sliding shutter panel and acts as a gutter for collecting rainwater. The movable mashrabiya panel offers passive cooling and sun protection. The modular system allows for flexibility in installation and configuration, showcasing a forward-thinking approach to sustainable architecture. Located in the heart of Monferrato, a region known for its vineyards and woodland hills, the hotel consists of a cluster of four modular, eco-friendly cabins. The design is inspired by traditional haystacks, blending naturally with the rural landscape. The project was designed with a strong focus on sustainability and a minimal footprint. The cabins were largely prefabricated off-site, reducing construction time and on-site disruption. To adapt to the sloping terrain, the cabins are raised off the ground on slender pillars, minimizing their impact on the environment. The cabins feature a distinctive A-shaped roof with fully glazed triangular elevations, which also function as the load-bearing structure. This creates a strong visual identity while maximizing natural light and views. The cabins are constructed primarily from natural and eco-compatible materials. The exterior is clad in oil-treated larch, a material chosen for its durability and aging characteristics. The interior also features wood finishes throughout. The LILELO hotel comprises four cabins, each serving a specific function. Private suites: Three of the cabins are private guest suites, each with a continuous, open-plan interior. A deck at one end provides outdoor seating, leading to a sleeping area and a bathroom at the opposite end. Only the toilet is enclosed. Communal cabin: The fourth cabin serves as a common space. It features a large kitchen and a generous outdoor area with a table, intended as a gathering place for guests. The continuous interior layout and expansive windows create a seamless connection between the indoor spaces and the natural surroundings. The interior and furnishings are crafted from wood, creating a warm and cozy atmosphere that complements the cabins' natural setting. - Sea Ranch Cabin | Framestudio | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | House | Designed by noted Bay Area architect Joseph Esherick, the home was third in a series of affordable demonstration houses commissioned by the developers of The Sea Ranch, a weekend home community and cultural experiment grounded in 1960s idealism. The home’s current owner, its second since its construction in 1968, sought to restore the home while improving its liveability and performance. George Homsey, Esherick’s partner, consulted on the exterior restoration. New plywood and laminate kitchen cabinets with apartment-size appliances were designed to utilize every inch of space. The original plywood shelving was restored using reclaimed materials from the demolition. A hinged partition gives privacy between the two bedrooms, designed to preserve the original intent of the bedroom level by folding away into the wall when not in use. - Warsaw Weekend House | Desea Architects | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | House | Constructed by architect Adam Pszczolkowski of Desea Architects in 2020, the Warsaw Weekend House is a 376-square-foot family retreat built on an allotment in Warsaw's Rakowiec district. Located on land leased from the city as part of a tradition of community gardens in Poland, the home serves as a much-needed escape from urban life. The garden site is secluded by a large hedge and filled with fruit trees, pines, and lilac bushes. The design is a clever mix of inspirations, combining the aesthetics of an old Swedish transistor radio with the natural setting. The house is a simple, rectangular box clad in glass and plywood framed by white high-pressure laminate panels. Its transparent nature makes it feel embedded within the lush greenery, creating a fluid connection between the indoors and outdoors. The large windows flood the interior with natural light, enhancing the sense of space. Inside, the warm, cohesive space features walls and a ceiling lined with raw plywood, a material chosen to age naturally and complement the surrounding trees. A low-maintenance epoxy resin floor further contributes to the home's elegant, contemporary feel. The open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area seamlessly connects with the outdoors. A smaller bedroom, often used by the owner's father, provides an option for overnight stays. - Hiža house | PROARH architects | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Renovation | The Hiža house is a 230-square-meter renovation project by the Zagreb-based firm PROARH, led by architect Davor Matekovic, completed around 2015. Located on the green slopes near Kumrovec in the Zagorje region of Croatia, the project transformed a dilapidated, decades-old cottage into a modern and organic living space that honors local heritage. The design reinterprets traditional cottage architecture by combining natural materials with a bold, contemporary intervention. The main architectural feature of the renovation is the addition of a sleek glass and aluminum cube that replaces the old porch and slides outwards from the main thatched volume. This addition serves as a dynamic entrance and a living area that is oriented to receive maximum southern exposure. With sliding glass walls, the cube blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces and opens up to a new wooden terrace that appears to hover over the hillside, offering expansive views of the Zagorje landscape. The traditional cottage form was preserved, but the architects enhanced its material palette by using locally sourced, rustic materials. The original thatched roof was replaced with a new one that extends down over the façade, and the gables were re-clad with wood. This innovative use of straw, considered an archaic material, creates a warm and earthy exterior that contrasts with the minimalist glass cube. The renovation also preserved the cottage's original stone pedestal, grounding the updated structure in its history. A pathway made of tree stumps leads to the entrance, further connecting the home with its natural surroundings. Inside, the house is organized across three floors: a basement, a ground floor for common living spaces (leisure, dining, and cooking areas), and a first floor for the sleeping areas. The ground floor is arranged around a central "hearth" in the traditional Zagorje manner. This approach of reinterpreting traditional construction technologies and using local, renewable resources demonstrates a commitment to sustainable, low-impact design. The project has received recognition, including being shortlisted for a World Architecture Festival Award in 2015. - House MM | a2o2 arhitekti | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Renovation | House MM is a renovation project completed in 2020 by the Slovenian firm a2o2 arhitekti in Domžale, Slovenia. The project involved renovating a derelict early 20th-century house to retain its historic character while adapting it for modern living. The architects and owners aimed to present a financially viable and sustainable alternative to new construction, preserving a piece of the neighborhood's "anonymous built heritage". Design and architectural features Balancing old and new: The exterior of the original brick house, including the facades and window openings, was preserved. A new metal roof was installed to replace the original one, which was beyond repair. New, modern interventions were deliberately designed to be distinct from the old structure, creating a dialogue between the past and present. Open and layered interior: The interior was cleared of redundant layers to expose the original structure. A new wooden-clad service core was inserted inside, keeping it separate from the old walls. Vertical spatial sequence: The home is arranged vertically, featuring a kitchen and dining area at ground level. A double-height living space with a fireplace and a large window opens onto the garden, while a new mezzanine bedroom is situated above the kitchen. Materiality: The new additions are clad in timber, contrasting with the old masonry. The ground floor is finished with terrazzo, achieved by polishing the concrete flooring. The owners were actively involved in the renovation. With the help of a restoration specialist, they restored the original windows and helped with the interior paneling and terrazzo flooring.
