The project, an initiative of the hikers' association Hikemates, was completed in 2022 and provides a simple, year-round rest stop and meeting point for tourists and hikers at an altitude of 850 meters. The design prioritizes practicality and functionality over aesthetics, aiming for a utilitarian interior free of unnecessary elements while still providing optimal comfort. The 30-square-meter cabin features a straightforward, pragmatic layout designed for efficient use. To the right of the entrance are tiered sleeping platforms that span the height of the cabin, while to the left is a dining area with a small stove. Storage shelves are integrated for luggage and food. The building is set on road panels to protect it from moisture, and its pitched roof extends beyond the entrance to provide a sheltered entryway. Constructed entirely of wood, the Shelter's exterior is clad in black-stained spruce boards, allowing it to blend seamlessly into the forest environment. The frame is hinged and reinforced with black-grey stained pine plywood from the inside. For insulation, a horizontal grate of spruce prisms is used, filled with thermal insulation, and covered with a vapor-permeable foil. The roof consists of spruce prisms with insulation and is covered with corrugated galvanized sheet metal. The dark facade is accented by a vibrant blue-painted window frame and a red table, adding a playful touch of color to the otherwise monochromatic exterior. - Tigín Tiny Home | Common Knowledge | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Tiny House | The Tigín Tiny Home is an initiative launched in 2022 by Common Knowledge, an Irish non-profit social enterprise, to address Ireland's housing crisis. Designed as an oversized, transportable caravan, the Tigín—the Gaelic word for 'small cottage'—is an affordable, sustainable, and consciously designed housing alternative. Beyond simply selling the tiny homes, Common Knowledge's project empowers people by sharing the necessary construction skills through their educational programs. The Tigín Tiny Home is a compact yet airy micro-dwelling of 20 square meters with a smart, two-level layout. High ceilings and large, double-glazed windows create a sense of space and connectivity with nature. Kitchenette: Includes an oven, gas hobs, and a sink, with Iroko hardwood worktops. Seating/Sleeping Area: A window seat converts into a double bed for guests. Bathroom: A shower and a composting toilet enhance the home's self-sufficiency. Storage: Cleverly integrated shelves and cabinets provide ample storage. A ladder provides access to a cozy loft space large enough for a king-sized bed. Sustainable and locally-sourced materials The Tigín's construction focuses on minimizing its carbon footprint through the use of natural and locally-sourced materials. Corrugated hemp panels from Margent Farm provide a lightweight, biodegradable, and sustainable alternative to traditional cladding. The walls are insulated with breathable cork, which naturally regulates temperature and humidity. The floor is finished with natural rubber linoleum tiles. A timber frame provides the structural support. The tiny home is constructed on a custom-built, triple-axle trailer, making it mobile and highly adaptable. Its design prioritizes energy efficiency, with some reports suggesting it uses up to 30 percent less energy than a standard UK home, thanks to strategic glazing and thermal performance. Involved people and organizations Developer and Designer: Common Knowledge (Ireland). Co-Founders: Harrison Gardner, Fionn Kidney, Erin McClure, and Spider Hickman. Lead Designer: Shantanu Starick. Materials Partner (Hemp Cladding): Margent Farm (Cambridgeshire, UK), which pioneered the use of hemp in sustainable construction. Collaborators and Build Team: Nico Bigatti, Jordan Allen, Cillian O'Gaora, Ian Tobin, and Enda Grogan, along with numerous students from the Build School program. OFF-GRID ACCOMMODATION | Cabin | The Pod[e] Mulla Mulla is a luxurious, off-grid holiday cabin designed by A-HA Design Studio in collaboration with Scott Taylor, co-founder of the Pod[e] brand. Located on 300 acres of coastal bushland on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, the prototype combines high-end comfort with eco-conscious features to minimize its environmental footprint. The design process was deeply rooted in the site's unique characteristics. The design team camped on the coastal bushland to understand the site's essence, topography, prevailing winds, vistas, and soundscapes. The cabin's bold and distinct exterior changes color throughout the day with the shifting rhythms of the light. It features prismatic and champagne-colored panels, along with a mirrored skirt, which creates a captivating visual effect. Material palette: The interior and exterior material choices reference the native flora of the region, the Ironstone Mulla Mulla, a compact native plant with light, feathery blooms endemic to the Eyre Peninsula. The interior features a palette of soft pinks, natural timber, and brushed stainless steel. Dimensions: The cabin has a modest footprint, measuring 12 by 5 meters, with an additional 50 square meters of decking. Open and connected interior: Despite its small size, the design aims to maximize a sense of openness and connection to the landscape. Sustainability The cabin is self-sufficient and operates entirely off-grid. It is powered by solar panels. It is equipped with a rainwater catchment and filtration system. The design uses natural ventilation and strategically placed windows and doors to create a comfortable internal climate. - Sprout Ruben & Marjolein | woonpioniers | ZHIG
RESIDENTIAL | Modular House | Located in Olst, the Netherlands, the Sprout Ruben & Marjolein is a bio-based, compact home created by Amsterdam-based studio Woonpioniers. Completed as a prototype for the studio's flexible and transportable Sprout concept, the house was developed for actual clients Ruben and Marjolein. The design is based on a prefabricated, modular system that can be lengthened, shortened, or stacked, with the specific build in Olst comprising a two-story volume topped with a mono-pitched roof and an open, greenhouse-like volume. The project emphasizes sustainability by utilizing as many bio-based materials as possible, including a wooden frame structure and a hemp insulation system. The modular approach not only makes the home transportable and adaptable but also provides affordable square meters and energetic benefits. The greenhouse element is integrated into the living and dining area, which opens to the outside and, in turn, provides extra living comfort. The interior features a flexible floor plan with minimal rooms and maximum open space, and a natural collection of materials is used to connect the home with its environment. The interiors are highly personalized to the clients' wishes, with the greenhouse section of the home featuring an interior mezzanine terrace suspended above it. Skylight windows in the mezzanine open to create an indoor/outdoor space that looks out to the horizon and up to the sky. Woonpioniers is leveraging the insights gained from this prototype to develop more custom tiny housing projects in Europe. We share our name with a beautiful, remote, and historically important mountain in central Norway. Snøhetta is a place nobody is from, but anyone can experience. Creating places for societies to connect with each other and with the world around them is a primary motivation in our work. Dialogue and diversity empower this approach. Snøhetta first significant commission was in 1989 for Bibliotheca Alexandrina, reviving the ancient library in Alexandria, Egypt. This was followed by commissions for the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo and the National September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion at the World Trade Center in New York City. Since those early projects, many other internationally acclaimed works have been realized around the globe. source: snohetta.com Category Opera house Post Type Building Project Type CULTURAL Country South Korea Year 2024 Area 48 000 m2 Client Busan Metropolitan City Government Photographers www.zhiig.com Premium Member Interior Designer Huang Wei Collaborate 3D Design Suggest Materials Suggest Product Add Request Design © ZHIG Team Materials Suggested by Manufacturers: Model Full Name Details Details View more

The project's name, Plúmula, which refers to the embryonic shoot of a plant, reflects the design's focus on new growth and revitalization. A central aspect of the design is the preservation of pre-existing adobe walls, honoring the building's history, while a lightweight steel framework is integrated to reinforce the structure and expand the space. The house was commissioned by Amy García Kennedy, a plastic artist who works abroad and wanted a retreat in her home country. At the heart of the design is a magnificent Flamboyán tree, which the architects made the focal point of the property, with key views from the workshop, meeting space, and bedroom all centered on its contemplation. The layout was designed for practicality and warmth, utilizing a sensitive monochrome palette that visually enlarges the interiors. This is achieved through the use of budget-friendly, locally sourced materials such as steel, adobe, pine wood, and red brick. These materials also create a dialogue between the old and new, and their familiarity to local craftsmen facilitated the construction process. The project employs several sustainable strategies. The existing adobe walls offer natural thermal mass, keeping the home cool during the hot Oaxacan summers and warm in the winters. The house also incorporates a solar water heater and a rainwater harvesting system with filters, while LED lighting was chosen for energy efficiency. Tall sliding windows blur the boundaries between the indoors and the surrounding lush environment, inviting natural light and ventilation and reinforcing the visual connection to the Flamboyán tree. Plúmula Workshop House is a project that responds thoughtfully to its context, integrating into the local neighborhood while offering a tranquil and inspiring sanctuary for its inhabitant.
