Acera de Medio is a unique micro-lodging unit located in the picturesque village of Briones, La Rioja, Spain. This remarkable project, designed by Hace architecture, involves the thoughtful renovation of a former wine cellar, transforming it into a cozy guesthouse that spans an area of 30 m² (323 ft²). The lodge is integrated into the hillside, making use of the natural landscape while providing an immersive experience for guests. The existing structure is organized across four distinct levels, both above and below ground, reflecting the original design intended for the gravity-fed winemaking process. The upper level facilitates grape intake, while the lower levels feature rock-carved cavities that were once used for barrel aging. This distinctive design highlights the building's historical importance and improves the guest experience by offering diverse spatial dynamics. After remaining unused for two decades, the cellar is poised for a remarkable transformation into a guesthouse that honors its rich heritage. The renovation focuses on preserving the original morphology and spatial qualities of the building, including its characteristic level changes and material integrity. Notable features, such as sections of the walls that bear the historical marks of winemaking, will be retained, ensuring that the site's legacy is celebrated and integrated into the guest experience.
