Description:
The project focuses on the renovation of a former wine cellar into a micro-lodging unit located in Briones, La Rioja, Spain. Spanning an area of 30 m² (323 ft²), the project is designed by Hace architecture.
The existing structure is embedded into the hillside and is organized across four levels, both above and below ground. Originally designed to facilitate the gravity-fed winemaking process, the layout includes areas for grape intake at the upper level and barrel aging within rock-carved underground cavities.
After being unused for two decades, the cellar is set to be transformed into a guesthouse. The renovation aims to maintain the original building's morphology and spatial qualities, preserving its level changes and material character. Key features, such as specific wall sections that showcase the historical marks of winemaking, will be retained to honor the site's heritage.
