The HIP Boathouse, designed by Abbott Brown Architects, is a 520-square-foot wooden structure located in Herman's Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. Completed in 2021, the project is elevated on stilts above the high-water line, with a viewing porch that cantilevers over the beach. In 2022, it was recognized with the Nova Scotia Lieutenant Governor's Medal of Excellence, the highest architectural honor in the province. The boathouse is divided into two distinct areas: a closed boat storage space and an open-air screened viewing porch facing the water. The viewing porch is constructed with durable solid hemlock timber and beams to withstand the saline environment and ocean storms, featuring exposed steel cross bracing and tie rods. The interior boat storage area, protected from the elements, utilizes 2x6 wood stud construction with plywood veneer cladding and sanded hemlock flooring. The exterior materials, such as untreated eastern cedar shingles, spruce framing, and local rough-sawn hemlock, were chosen to complement the natural surroundings.
